Bergen Community College is giving a nod to Earth Day with a musical tribute, “The Seas Are Rising: An Earth Day Concert Event” on Thursday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre, Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus. Doors open at 7 p.m.
The concert experience by Dan Sheehan will be performed by Bergen Community College music faculty and special guests.
The show aims to call attention to the urgency of the climate crisis, with the goal of spreading awareness through entertaining music, lyrics, and visuals. There will also be a discussion on the need for immediate action to fend off a worst case scenario for the planet.
The songs focus on people around the world already facing consequences of climate change — floods, droughts, fires, and hurricanes, from the Americas to Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The music tells the story that the time for climate action is NOW, combined with a message of hope that “we can come together and demand action from our leaders.”
“The Seas Are Rising” is written by BCC music professor Dan Sheehan, and is performed by a band featuring various faculty and area musicians playing a variety of instruments from Western and non-Western traditions.

The Seas Are Rising is a concert experience and forthcoming album telling stories of the impacts of climate change and environmental catastrophes already affecting the people of the world, calling attention to the urgency of the climate crisis. The show tells the stories of people already ravaged by intensified climate events from hurricanes (Maria in Puerto Rico, Katrina in New Orleans), brush fires (Brazil, Australia, California), droughts (Madagascar) and more, with a message of hope that people can unify and turn the crisis around for a better future, allowing our children to inherit a flourishing planet.
Sheehan definitely delves into various social issues in this project. “There’s a long history of artists speaking about things that are happening currently, across different media….musicians from the Temptations to Neil Young have historically commentated on what’s going on in the world around them, and I feel like that’s been a little lost in the modern music industry,” explained Sheehan.
“… for those who love and treasure concept albums, and those critical of modern capitalism in particular, this CD might be regarded as something of a gem.”
Dan Sheehan joins as part of his solo tour of the U.K., Ireland and Spain. Sheehan has garnered airplay around the world for his albums The Dan Sheehan Conspiracy and the follow-up Are You Conspirienced?, earning two awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
